Illness or Injury

Illness: Illness may be acute or chronic. Please notify the nurse if your child has a fever greater than 100.4. Your child should stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without any fever reducing medication (such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen).

For a significant, acute illness (such as the flu, pneumonia, kidney infection) for which your child is out of school for longer than 3 days, please notify the nurse. This will help the nurse plan to meet your child's needs as he/she returns to school.  This also helps the nurse address trends and health issues within the school environment.

A doctor's note will be required for extended absences. If your child is going to be out and you would like to receive make up work/homework, his/her guidance counselor should be notified as well. For chronic illnesses ( ie. epigastric reflux disease, asthma, diabetes, depression, anxiety, seizures, allergies, etc) the nurse should be notified at the beginning of school, so a plan of care can be developed for your child.  Some of these conditions require  a careplan for you to fill out (see links below), along with the MD signature as required, and returned to the nurse's office.

Injury:  If your child has an injury that results in decreased mobility or movement, please notify the nurse. If your child has had a concussion, a specific plan of care will be developed in order for your child to return to academics and athletics, so please notifiy the nurse as soon as possible of this condition. Click here for more information regarding concussions.  The nurse will make the necessary accommodations (ie use of the elevator, evacuation plan, ensure note-taking capability, extra set of books, etc). For accommodations to be in place for longer than a day or two, a doctor's note is necessary.

Medical Excuse for Physical Education: if one to five gym classes will be missed, a parent note must be given to the physical education teacher or nurse. If more than five gym classes will be missed a physician's note is required. For excuses longer than 4 weeks, your child will be placed in a study.
