Transitions: High School Expectations and Opportunities
The goal of Masconomet’s Freshman Guidance Orientation Program is to help students transition from the middle school to high school and provide a general overview of important information about the guidance department and high school in general. Our program is comprised of two parts: small group discussion and one-on-one counselor meetings. Topics covered in our small group discussions include, but are not limited to, comparison of middle school and high school expectations, graduation/college requirements, course selection and academic rigor and extracurricular involvement. Upon completion of small group discussions, students are then asked to make a one-on-one appointment with their guidance counselor. During this time, students will sit down with their counselor in order to share their interests, goals and future plans. They will also be re-introduced to Naviance (our college/career planning system), so they may begin to view high school as a four-year plan. Freshmen are encouraged to achieve the best grades they can in an appropriately challenging curriculum. We encourage all students to get involved. Masconomet runs an annual activity fair in September, so students can learn about the many offerings in our community. Involvement with sports, clubs, or community service can help students discover what they are passionate about and possibly can help guide their post-secondary plans.
